Entourage Yearbooks is challenging yearbook designers to think outside the box when it comes to creating this year’s school yearbook.  The top rule to bend or break–color selection.  According to Edward Jo, Production Manager at Entourage, having fun with school colors is one way to express creativity while paying homage to tradition.

“We encourage students to use variations of their schools’ colors for their yearbook.  Using different hues of a school’s color theme allows you to keep the color tradition alive but also inject some of your classes personal creativity,” says Jo.  Designers can play up their school color theme by mixing in varying hues, lighter and darker, throughout the yearbook to give it a more modern, trendy feel. “Also try adding in some brighter colors that compliment the original color theme to really make the yearbook come to life,” adds Jo.

At the end of the year, schools often find themselves with spare yearbooks. Although it’s always better to have too many than too little, no yearbook committee wants to feel as though their budget was not utilized properly.  Spare yearbooks can come in handy when schools least expect it, and they can also be worth a little bit of money.

A few extra yearbooks should always be reserved for the school library. This gives students access to the legacy left behind by previous alumni.  Although a class reunion is still quite a few years off, rest assured there will be plenty of attendees who will get a kick out of seeing their old school yearbook, and if it is in good condition, a few sales will surely result. Next to Long were stacks of freshly printed and hard-bound “deployment yearbooks.” Delivered with only three days to spare, the pages of 304th Brigade’s deployment yearbook capture the unit’s journey, as well serve as a historical record of the deployment. The book provides insight into the life of a soldier on tour.

“It’s their memories, their photographs,” said Long. “That book captures the spirit of every soldier in that brigade and every picture has a story.”

According to Long, it all started with a statement from the Brigade Commander, Col. Norman B. Green. “He said ‘I would like a book to document our deployment’ and I just took off with it,” said Long, who used many of her own photos in the book, as well as collecting hundreds from other soldiers.

For many soldiers, the pictures and the stories in a deployment yearbook can help them explain things to family and friends that are often difficult to articulate.

“You build a completely different relationship with people abroad,” said Long. “It helps the soldiers and the families understand the different relationships and to delineate between the relationships in combat and in a safe environment.”

For soldiers that have a difficult time reintegrating back into civilian culture, deployment books can play a particularly important role. 

“They are mentally and physically exhausted when they get back.” said Long. “I keep a copy in the car and when I run into a soldier we’ll look at the yearbook and laugh and say ‘do you remember this?’ It lightens their spirits.”
